Scribes of the Cairo Geniza
Wednesday, February 13, from 12:30 to 1:30 pm
In Love Data Month, on Valentine’s Eve, come show your love for the Scribes of the Cairo Geniza project (https://www.zooniverse.org/projects/judaicadh/scribes-of-the-cairo-geniza) at the first session of 2019 next Wednesday!
The second phase of this great online crowdsourcing project will be rolling out soon, in which volunteers will transcribe manuscript fragments of the 10th-13th centuries from the Cairo Geniza. You still don’t need to know Hebrew or Arabic to participate. How can that be? Come find out! Emily Esten, the Libraries’ new Judaica Digital Humanities Coordinator, will be joining us to share an update on the transcription phase. The number of project volunteers participating online is now just over 4,000, and the number of classifications by volunteers is almost 217,000!
You’re invited to the Vitale Media Lab in the Kislak Center (6th floor, Van Pelt-Dietrich Library Center) next Wednesday, February 13, from 12:30 to 1:30 pm, for help getting started and for good company while working on the project. First-timers welcome at every meeting. Come for any part of the hour. Bring your lunch, bring a laptop, and give it a try. A few laptops are available in the Vitale Media Lab if needed.
