Temporary bug? I'm trying to get to the 'about' text and clicking on about yields:

logging in always takes you to your name space?

i just went to certain tag space (not the general tags.library page) and logged in from there, as i wanted to copy a post. rather than leaving me on that page, it took me to my name space. i didn't think this was what we wanted to have happen?

Safari troubles?

THIS IS AN OPEN BUG

A student has reported that she can't use PennTags in Safari. The posting window doesn't appear, though she is able to make a new project. Can someone confirm this Safair issue for me? I don't have a mac.

(later) -- Ok. The student just brought her computer to the reference desk and it's true that she can't edit posts, or add tags. When she opens the posting screen, everything appears to be fine, but then the edits don't take effect, though the edited post moves to the top of the page.

Tags not showing in catalog

OPEN BUG

In trying to show an example, to the Norwegian student who emailed, about tags in our catalog I tagged a book. The tags did show up in the record but when I went back to edit the post, to add descriptive text, the tags disappeared in the Franklin record.

Problem with

Open Bug

I have found that clicking the "Add and Go to PennTags" button from the posting page neither adds the post nor does it take you to PennTags. The posting page simply disappears, and there is no "your post was successful" confirmation. This happened if I used either the bookmarklet or the toolbar (FireFox version 1.0.3).

I have noticed that some of my posts that belong to a project do not have the "belongs to projectname project" text. I think this is a great feature and I feel it is important to keep uniformity with all posts.

Search confusion

THIS IS AN OPEN BUG

After you search, you get those plus signs on the side, which should take you to intersections between tags. Sadly, when you click on the +tag, you get an error because the url is still http://tags.library.upenn.edu/search/term+tag. It should be http://tags.library.upenn.edu/tag/tag+tag.

The search is of the tags and of the titles...so the numbers next to the tags is meaningless...try searching american+history+hollywood...that's not 4 items

Now that it works, it reveals another problem. The search is of the tags and of the titles...so the numbers next to the tags is meaningless...try searching american+history+hollywood...that's not 4 items

Development ToDo's

  1. Move to new server
  2. Move to new database server
  3. Stabilize project stuff
  4. Implement New design
  5. Demonstrate tagcloud on the right.
  6. Remove windows characters from html
  7. RSS Feed needs work
  8. Deal with 4000 character limit in posting form
  9. Integrate film projects into VCat
  10. change "feed available here" to "subscribe to this page"
  11. make a link to my tagspace from my name in the top right corner
  12. Redo the bookmarklets and the Penn Toolbar

Top Priorities (in no order)

  • Batch tool
    • Import bookmarks from delicious / amazon / yahoo /browser bookmarks
    • Edit Tags all at once (replace all movie with movies)
  • Project Layout tool
    • Let me add subheadings with discursive text in projects
    • Reorder posts in a project
  • Posting tool
    • Allow me to tag pages in Franklin other than record pages -- tag a search or a subject heading
    • Fail screen for items tagged from Factiva or Lexis
    • When I try to tag something that I have already tagged, tags and description should be included so that I don't tag the same thing twice accidentally
    • The ability to tag an article from a fulltext journal article where there has been no been penntext (extremely important and extremely difficult)
      • It's not that it is hard, many articles can already be tagged without a problem.
      • It is resources that do not have stable urls that are problems or licensed resources being available from off campus.
      • So, I can do two things here:
        • scan for proxyness -- that is, if it looks like a proxiable resource, then prepend the proxy login.
        • scan the page for a doi -- this will be time consuming for the patron since all pages will have to be scanned.
      • Do you have any guidence?
    • Allow users to post an item to several projects

Thinking... I think the scanning for proxyness seems really worth doing, as it will solve jstor, psycarticles (I think) and some other obvious problems. But, I don't like the idea of slowing down posting for everyone just for those people who want to post from article pages w/out penntext. Perhaps 1. Slower bookmarklet for the journal lovers. 2. What does citeulike do?

How did you solve that problem?

If the textarea has more than 4000 characters, PennTags will alert you of this in an alert popup.  It will not submit the form at that point.  But it does clear the form...I'm still working on that.

Click-through Disclaimer and Welcome

THIS IS AN OPEN IMPLEMENTATION REQUEST

  1. Popup window including the followign text in front of the posting box:

Your PennTags posts are accessible to anyone on the Internet. By its nature, this tool is public and is designed to facilitate community-building where the sharing of resources is encouraged. If you want to make your bookmarks (posts) private so that they will not automatically display to the public, select the option "Hide from public view" when you add or edit your posts.

Use of PennTags is governed by the Library's Privacy Policy and content is subject to the University's Policy on Appropriate Use of Electronic Resources .

(checkbox)I have read the above statement and would like to continue adding a post to Penntags
(checkbox)I would like to leave PennTags immediately without adding a post

  2. A fuller welcome will also be sent to new posters including the language from my earlier post. (When we launch PennTags (after red modifications), we'll send a welcome email to old users)

groups, networks, teams

ENHANCEMENT

We're working hard on implementing a better project management system which we'll talk about at the next meeting.

In the meantime, here's something I just stumbled onto:

Ma.gnol.ia has groups, where you join a group and can share things inside the group, or through the group.

And del.icio.us has just implemented Networks.

Is this something we should be building into the architecture? Some ability to identify myself as part of a group or set of groups, so beyond the project level?

Working with Franklin and 15 libraries

ENHANCEMENT

I'm using Penntags to gather a list of census block statistics for a meeting tomorrow, and I'm realizing that it would be great if I could print out the list into three chunks -- one for each library location. But, of course, I've already tagged a bunch of things before I realized that I'd like to do that. But, what a great sorting option that would be -- sort my project/page by library location, by author of book, etc. Just saying -- it would be really nice.

Tag Lists

ENHANCEMENT

In a perfect world, when I am tagging a post, I would like for the tag to be autofilled with a tag I have already used. For example, when using the tag bioinformatics I would like for the tag to show up when I type the bioi. This would enforce some continuity. It would be even nicer if when I typed bio that I would have some kind of little pop-up box with the options of biology & bioinformatics and anything else bio...so I could choose. I hate to say it but delicious does a nice job of this. Also I would like a listing of Popular tags to show up, not neccessarily my tags but others.

Can we get this in before the July code freeze? Please, thank you.

A Bug with the Search Function

Apologies.  I was using Safari and the description of the bug did not post.  So, here is the bug.

One of our librarians noticed a bug about our search function.  If you search a tag, public_health, the search results display postings where public_health is a tag as well as where it just a phrase, e.g., public health.  Also, in the Related to box, e.g., Related to public_health, when you click on a tag that is related, e.g., 6+portal, the search engine connects the terms with OR rather than AND.  So, 6+portal does not display 6 postings  It displays more than 6.  In looking at the results, you see postings that are just portal, public health and public_health+portal.  This does not happen if you are doing your search from the Tags page.

On the Tags page, if you locate public_health (17), click on that, you'll see in the Related to box 6+portal.  Now, if you click on 6+portal, you do get 6 postings with the tags public_health and portal.

We need to fix the search function so that it doesn't confuse our users.

future URL changes? redirects

POTENTIAL ENHANCEMENT REQUEST, if URLs change

Nick Okrent just made an interesting point.  He had created a project about magazine cover images and put it in Ered.  Then we changed the URLs for projects (from http://tags.library.upenn.edu/bibliography/2020 to http://tags.library.upenn.edu/project/2020), but we never told him the URL changed.  So he had to ask why it wasn't working and what to do about it.  I assured him that URLs aren't going to change like that again, but if they do, can be do redirects, so we don't have to go back and change URLs?

what a world of difference a closing 3rd level parens makes...

Adding and removing posts from projects

Just a reminder about the mechanism for adding and removing posts from a project, when adding a post to a project you simply mouse over the "add to project" link and whala it is added. Now if I come back to a project after some time and forget what I have already placed in it; if I attempt to add something already in it, as we know it removes it. Is this something we are going to work on? I know it was raised awhile ago but don't remember if it made the second list of to-do's.

Also the text box that does appear looks exactly like the one that says you have added a post. If someone is going through and adding alot of posts at one time to a project, like I was, you don't read the message and before you know it you have inadvertantly removed posts.

Just a reminder about this problem.

I'm not sure this is a complete fix, but I've made a few changes...

  1. re-enabled the toggling 'belongs to projectname project' appearing in the record
  2. disabled the ability to remove a post from a project by clicking the project name again.
Let me know if this is acceptible...
- posted by Melanie Cedrone - Still Needs Work -
I don't think we have solved the problem, in fact I think it has been made worse. If a pop-up box comes up now and says it has removed a post but then doesn't, even if it wasn't the original intention of the user to remove the post, we have just lost some credibility and further confused the user. I don't know what the fix would be. Could we ,once the post has been added to a project, have that project link disappear from the project list? This could be a quick way for someone to a. know they have added the post to the project and b. doesn't give them the opportunity to become confused by clicking on the link again. Just a thought.

Ok, this is fixed and tested.  Thanks to Illene, I found that when I re-wrote the project parser I had used old code that determined if a post should be hidden or not -- that code didn't account for you being the owner and wanting to see your hidden posts!  All is well again...

Not really a bug, but I'm confused...-- kind of a bug

FIXED (thanks, mike)

Mike, I just sent you an email about this, but thought I would post it, too, in case anyone else can tell me what I'm doing wrong...

A while back I made a guide based on PennTags feeds. I just went to update the feeds, as they weren't displaying, since I was using old feeds, I guess. So I thought I had it all under control, but now I see that the new feeds I put in are feeds from the last 7 days. Since I posted all the items many months ago, nothing displays. What am I missing? How do I correct this? The guide is at http://gethelp.library.upenn.edu/guides/english/engl96.html, in case you want to see.

posting error

FIXED

For the past few days, when I post a new item, everything works fine if I click the button that says that my post was successful. But, if I don't click that button and wait for the post to dissapear, I get an oracle error until I click "ok" in the popup box. Once I do that, the whole screen goes away. Is there some error at the closing of the box part.

The error is apparently at /webservers/tags/cgi-bin/postit line 348, line 225.

Ok, it's important to put the curly brace in the right place.  A syntax error in the posting code directed that the post of the editor be attempted twice.  Naturally, the second attempt to insert a record in the ANNOGINE_EDITOR table would fail the uniqueness constraint.  This error has been fixed.

Blogging Rules for Tagteam

At the meeting on April 12, we came up with procedures to make sure that we are keeping track of bugs. I let Mike know about them, and we're all in agreement that this plan should work better to help us keep track of bug reports and enhancement requests:

April 14: I've added some more rules to try to keep track of what we're going -- LA

Bugs:

  1. Each tagteam member should report bugs when she finds them in Penntags.
  2. When you report a bug, you are responsible for keeping track of it until it is fixed, even if that just means updating to make sure that it hasn't been secretly fixed, or editing the post so that it will rise to the top.
  3. When you post an open bug, in bold at the top, you should indicate that it is an open bug.
  4. When Mike fixes the bug, he usually puts a note in the comments field. When you see that, you should check to make sure that he fixed the bug you were referring to, and then remove the bold from the top of the item.

Enhancements:

  1. When you have an idea for PennTags, you should post it to the Enhancements section of the blog.
  2. At some point, we should work out a cleaner way to deal with this section.

Implementation-Ready Ideas:

  1. When the team has decided on a new feature, it should be described fully in a post in the implementation section. As long as the feature doesn't work, there should be bold at the top of the section saying that it is an open feature request. This section is only for features that we have all agreed on, and are ready for implementation.
  2. As Mike works on the feature, he'll comment on the issues as they go through the development process.
  3. If you posted the implementation request, you should remove the bold when you think the feature has been implemented.
  4. After that, problems with the feature should go to the bugs section.

April 13 Tagteam

Agenda:

1. Formatting of posts - how many characters will display and will there be a standard font type

2. Review to do items

3. Timeline to launch of PT

4. ACRL proposal update

5. Design notes for new posting page http://staffweb.library.upenn.edu/prototypes/tagit/pages06/tagpost-alt.html

Meeting Notes:

1. Launch Preperations:

We decided to commit to a fall launch (sept) and work backwards from there to ensure that we're prepared with a stable and funcional PennTags and a prepared library staff even if Penntags does not have all of the functionality that it will eventually have. Beginning with the next meeting, we will start to come up with a firm plan including intermediate deadlines to prepare for the launch.

2. Information Sharing -- Getting the word out:

Internally: Annette reported that the Digital Image team is having a PennTags demo soon. Also, Jen Sweda will be reporting at Tech Services Council about PennTags.

Externally: Annette will be presenting a poster at SLA, Mike and Laurie are proposing a paper for ACRL, and will be attending an August meeting of ARL. Still waiting to hear from Educause.

Annette is going to write up an explanation of the work of Tagteam and our goals (in writely).

3. Design Issues:

Notes on Design:
After more use of Penntags, and looking at similar sites (connotea, for example), we discussed the plans for the new design, and agreed that we were moving away from the 3 columns with a tagcloud on the right and have grown fond of the cleaner, centered tagcloud. We still like the idea of moving the the navigation to the left including the new navigation boxes, and we'd like replace the top (many birds - small PennTags logo) with the new one (fewer birds -- Big PennTags logo).

We are also thinking we might like more explanatory text on the main page: (PennTags is a tool for locating, organizing, and sharing your favorite online resources. Members of the Penn Community can collect and maintain URLs, links to journal articles, records in Franklin, our online catalog, and VCat, our online video catalog.) Below the tagclous and explanation, we do want to display the most recent 10 (or so) posts along with links to posts from the last day, 2 days, week, month...

4. Standardized Display of Posts on main page:

Each post should display around 3 lines of unformatted text (unformatted after the citation, that is) (ie uniform font size, spacing, etc) with a link to open the full record (without page reload).

When you follow a tag to the /tag/ page, you should see the number of posts there and all of them displayed more fully. Along the top, we allow them to view just titles, or just titles and a few posts.

5. Blog Rules:

See the http://www.library.upenn.edu/blos/penntags/blog_logistics/blogging_rules_for_tagteam.html for new guidelines to help us keep track of bugs and enhancements.

how long the posts?

THIS IS AN OPEN BUG

I'm not sure if this counts as a bug, but there's no mention of the length-limit on posts in penntags. Do we want to make them longer since students are running into the limit? I don't think we do, but maybe something to think about.

Update: This is really just a standin for the fact that we need to find a way to fix the 4000 character posting limit without deleting people's posts or losing searchability.

-- Edited by Laura Allen on 04-13-2006 @ 02:28:10 PM
- posted by Michael Winkler - Average Length of Words -

I've always heard (from what source I don't know) that the average length of a word was 8 characters (7 characters and a space).  But the Wikipedia says that in the 856 million words used in all of the Wikipedias (in over 200 langauges) the average length is 6 characters (5 characters and a space).  The annotation field in PennTags is a varchar2 sql type field with 4000 characters length.  So it can hold, on average, between 500 and 666 (mark of the devil?) words.  There are two ways to extend this limit.  One is to create a second record for the post that has another 4000 character varchar2 field.  The other is use a binary large object field (blob) or character large object field (clob).  The down side to these field types is that they cannot be searched if we choose to search the annotation fields.

Let me know what you want to do...

- posted by Laura Allen - -

I'm not sure how others feel, but I think we definitely don't want to lose keyword searching of those fields. So, can we create another post and somehow attach it to the first one.

If we can't do that, can we tell people when their post has hit the limit and what part of it they'll lose as they're saving it?

Gathering similar links

I noticed that Melanie has posted a link to the bound by law comic , which Mike and I have both already posted links to. Unfortunately, there's no way to know that we all posted links to the same comic, because we all tagged slightly differen urls. It seems like a shame that we don't have them all tied together in some way, though, even though they aren't the same thing. Not sure what the solution would be, but you definitely lose the sense that this is a popular source, which it is, because you don't see that "and two other people" thing.

how much to display?

If you haven't yet looked at Windows Live Academic Search (http://academic.live.com/), take a look.  It's interesting how they deal with the display option...how much of the citation to show, I mean.  (It's controlled with the sliding bar above the search results.)  I'm not saying I like it necessarily, but it resonates a bit with our discussion this morning.

Welcome to Penntags Draft

Hey TagTeam: What do you think of this for the email we send out to people after the first time they post? We could also have it be a popup screen that they see the first time they login. What do you say?

Dear XXXXXX,
Welcome to Penntags! By posting a resource to PennTags, you've taken advantage of a great new service from the University of Pennsylvania Library. PennTags is a tool for locating, organizing, and sharing your favorite online resources. Members of the Penn Community can collect and maintain URLs, links to journal articles, records in Franklin, our online catalog, and VCat, our online video catalog.

Here are answers to some questions you might have.

Why should I use PennTags?
Have you ever bookmarked a web page and then cant find it again in your mass of bookmarks? The beauty of PennTags is that it allows you to organize your bookmarks/resources exactly the way you want and it lets you share them with others. It's both personal and portable.

How can I get started using PennTags?
You can tag many library-provided resources (e.g., catalog records, article citations, article search engines) simply by clicking the "Add to PennTags" icon from the resources themselves, but tagging webpages on the open web requires a bookmarklet. Get the bookmarklet at
http://tags.library.upenn.edu/help/start.html .

Who can see my PennTags?
Your PennTags posts are accessibly to anyone on the internet.
By its nature, this tool is public and is designed to facilitate community-building where the sharing of resources is encouraged. If you want to make your bookmarks private so that they will not automatically display to the public, select the option "Hide from public view" when you add or edit your posts. See the next question for more information on hidden posts. For more information about guarding your privacy on the web, please see the University's Privacy Website called "Your life Online ".

Is there a Privacy Statement regarding PennTags?

Use of PennTags is governed by the Library's Privacy Policy and content is subject to the University's Policy on Appropriate Use of Electronic Resources.

Who owns the copyright rights to my posts and projects?
The content you create is yours under the Creative Commons License of your choosing. You may select the copyright license at the time of posting, or later, by editing the post. If you do not select a copyright license option, we will assign your post the "Attribution Non-commercial No Derivatives
" license. The University of Pennsylvania Library reserves the right to display your post in Library materials, and in other library websites. Please note that much of the material on the web is already covered by copyright law and note the next question for information about what you may and may not add to Penntags. Please let us know if you have any questions by emailing library@pobox.upenn.edu

What kind of material am I allowed to post?
Please note that much of the material on the web, and especially material in licensed library databases, is already protected by copyright and has restricted uses. Posting an "excessive" portion of a resource; such as an entire journal article abstract or a complete journal article is prohibited. Please see our policy on Appropriate Use of Electronic Resources
for more information. A good, general source on copyright is the Copyright Management Center at Indiana University, Purdue University, Indianapolis .

For more information, see the full documentation at: http://tags.library.upenn.edu/help/ or email us at penntags@pobox.upenn.edu

Have fun!
Yours,
PennTags Development Team

To be honest, I think it's a lot. If it's a case of CYA, then I suppose it all needs to be there, and it's not important to us whether anyone reads it or not. But I think you can drop the "why should I use..." section at least b/c the person is clearly already using PennTags. Would you need the "how can I get started..." section? I guess you might b/c the tagger might not be coming in through a bookmarklet...Finally, it's PUrdue Univ. Perdue is the chicken university. :)

Thanks, Jen. I've changed the spelling of Purdue. I am not necessarily opposed to taking out the "why use" section. My only concern is that, for many people, the first time they use PennTags is because they've clicked on a link in Franklin, E-Red, Penntext, or VCat. So, they might really have no idea what PennTags is,or why they would use it. But, if others agree that it's too long, I can certainly take that section out.

I think I have to agree with Jen that it might be a bit long as a welcome. I think the opening paragraph is fantastic and after that couldn't we just direct them to the help pages that we painstakingly created?

Cool Mouse over

Hey I like the new mouse-over for tags. When you mouse over a tag, a small pop-up window tells you how many time it has been used.  Is this new? I am only noticing it now.

Hi Peter, you can find our "tagging tips" at http://tags.library.upenn.edu/help/taggingtips.html .

It might be clearer if the "about" tab said "about/help." Just a suggestion. -Peter

Bookmarklet and the Macs

The bookmarklet is sort of working for the Mac.  If you use FireFox, everything is normal.  However, if you use Safari, the notes for the posting do not display.  I tried to Edit to see if the note was still in the Notes box, but the box was blank. - Carlos

New Design for PennTags Page

Clicked on the link for the new PennTags prototype design and got a message saying it was no longer on the server.  Did we take it down from the server or did we move it elsewhere? - Carlos

Redirection limit exceeded

Seemingly unrelated items are getting grouped together at http://tags.library.upenn.edu/url/3908 . If I try to click on a link to go to the actual item, I receive the following message: "Redirection limit for this URL exceeded. Unable to load the requested page. I don't know who posted the original post, but the problem with that url is one I know about (and I'm pretty sure Mike knows about). If you click the PennTags link from the penntext screen and then log in and post, you post an incomplete url which is always the same. And is all of these. However, if you are already logged in when you post from the penntext screen you have no problem. I try to keep an eye on who is posting these and let them know how to fix their posts. but I hope the problem will eventually be solved.

it is the PennText login problem.  I will address this on Sunday.

Ok, I think this is fixed.  Try it and let me know.  Also, try other things too since the fix involved changes to the posting form application.  Let me know...
- posted by Laura Allen - fixed indeed -
Great news. I checked this in a bunch of different ways and it seems totally fixed. great.

Delete from project does not work

Everything in projects looks totally functional except "delete from project", which still doesn't work. It is possible to remove something from a project by clicking "add to project" and then selecting the project it's already in, but that's pretty confusing.

Editing a project reverts it to post status

Reported from a student: When I make a project, I can add things to it, but when I edit the project description, it reverts to a post, and I lose the project (though attached items stay in the project).

Project editing is re-enabled and doesn't make your projects become regular posts.
