The Brontës: 1820
Church of Saint Michael and All Angels, Haworth, West Yorkshire

The old Church of Saint Michael and All Angels in Haworth, West Yorkshire, of which Reverend Patrick Brontë was the incumbent, was a small, undistinguished 18th-century stone building, with tall arched windows, a high three-tier pulpit, narrow wooden box pews, a larger square pew used by the Brontës next to the east wall nearer the altar, and heavy wooden galleries. The tower, which survives, is of more ancient date.

All the Brontë family (except Anne Brontë, who died in Scarborough) were buried in the family vault beneath the floor of the church.

As Sunday school teachers, Branwell, Charlotte, and Anne Brontë were expected to inculcate discipline, enable their pupils to read the Bible, and provide some aspects of a basic education. Emily did not participate, and her response to the suggestion that Haworth Sunday school pupils be taught manners and respect for their betters was reportedly, "Vain attempt!"

A typical Whitsuntide Sunday school feast and procession, as described in Charlotte's Shirley recalls some of the more cheerful sides of contemporary village life as well as the sectarian hostility which might erupt there.
