The Brontës: 1839
Lothersdale, North Yorkshire
Stonegappe was a substantial three-storey house set on a hillside in Lothersdale, near Skipton, Yorkshire, with panoramic views toward the River Aire.Charlotte Brontë took a temporary post there as governess from May to July 1839 in the family of John Benson Sidgwick and his wife Sarah Hannah. She may have based some elements of Gateshead Hall in Jane Eyre on Stonegappe and its surroundings.
