The Brontës: 1839
Ripon, North Yorkshire
Located four miles north of Ripon in North Yorkshire, Norton Conyers was built in the 14th century, but after renovations, presently models a Jacobean style. The rookery, sunk fence, oak hall, great staircase, and family portraits resemble those of Thornfield Hall in Jane Eyre. Charlotte Brontë might have visited Norton Conyers in 1839 with her employer at that time, Mrs Sarah Hannah Sidgwick, who was residing in nearby Swarcliffe Hall.
