Edgar Allan Poe: 1821
After the death of their parents, Edgar Allan Poe, aged three, and his sister Rosalie Poe, aged eleven months, were taken in by Richmond families. Edgar was taken in by John and Frances Valentine Allan, and Rosalie by William and Jane Scott MacKenzie.
John Allan was a partner in the merchant firm Ellis and Allan, and was at that time living with Frances Valentine in quarters located above the firm's offices at Thirteenth and East Main Streets. Poe adopted the middle name “Allan” from his Richmond family.
In 1821, the Allan family moved to Fifth Street and Main Street in Richmond, VA, and eventually purchased a house there on 28 June 1825.
