Edgar Allan Poe: 1823
Richmond, Virginia

Edgar Allan Poe was enrolled in William Burke's school in 1823. There, he met Robert Craig Stanard, a fellow pupil. Invited to the Stanard home, Poe met Jane Stith Stanard, the inspiration for the first “To Helen” poem.

Jane Stanard died of tuberculosis in 1824, and the poem was published in 1831.
