Edgar Allan Poe: 1827
Boston, Massachusetts

Edgar Allan Poe entered the military in May 1827, enlisting under the name Edgar A. Perry. He was sent to Fort Independence at Boston Harbor.

Fort Independence is also a possible source locale for “The Cask of Amontillado,” a short story of live burial.
