Edgar Allan Poe: 1835
Edgar Allan Poe worked at the Richmond literary periodical, the Southern Literary Messenger, as a staff writer, critic, and editor from August 1835 to January 1837. Poe's association with the magazine gave him the opportunity to make his name as a critic.
The Southern Literary Messenger had its offices at 15th and Main Streets in Richmond, Virginia. The building was demolished in 1915, but materials from it were used to construct the first memorial to Poe in Richmond, the Poe Shrine and Garden at 1914-16 East Main Street nearby.
