Edgar Allan Poe: 1849
Richmond, Virginia and Baltimore, Maryland

Richmond After his wife Virginias death on January 30, 1847, Edgar Allan Poe returned to Richmond only briefly in 1848, and again in 1849. During his last visit to Richmond, Poe lectured on The Poetic Principle, and gave readings of The Raven. Poe also visited the Tally family who lived at Talavera at 2315 West Grace Street. Tradition has it that was at Talavera that Poe gave his last reading of The Raven, on September 25, 1849. Two days later, Poe left Richmond for the last time, and died in Baltimore on October 7, 1849. 1 Slide: - TalaveraRichmond 2315 W Grace Street [28 June 1969] 1849: Baltimore Edgar Allan Poe was admitted to George Washington College Hospital (now called Church Hospital) in Baltimore on October 3, 1849, and died shortly after. 8 Slides: - Old Washington Hospital Baltimore.
