William Shakespeare: 1898
London, England

In 1898 Lilian Baylis joined her aunt Emma Cons in the management of the Royal Victoria Coffee Music Hall, which was located in a theatre building called the Old Vic.

After Cons's death in 1912, Baylis took over the management of the theatre completely, and in 1914 began to organize the staging of Shakespearean performances. By 1923 she had overseen the staging of a complete cycle of Shakespeare's plays.

The Old Vic later came to be seen as one of the centers for Shakespearean productions in Britain.
