William Makepeace Thackeray: 1861
Kensington, London

In 1861, William Makepeace Thackeray bought a house at 2 Palace Green, in Kensington, London. The existing house was torn down and a new, large and handsome red brick mansion with stone facings in the Queen Anne style was built on the site.

On 23 December 1863, Thackeray died of a stroke in the house at 2 Palace Green. His death was recorded as being caused by a “cerebral effusion”.
