The South Asia Art Archive

Collection Curator: Prof. Michael Meister, W. Norman Brown Professor of South Asian Studies, Dept. of the History of Art.

Collection Access: Pushkar Sohoni, South Asia Studies Librarian, (215) 898-7460.

Holdings
The South Asia Art Archive at the University of Pennsylvania contains multiple collections. The largest component of this archive is the collection of photographs from the American Institute of Indian Studies' Center for Art and Archaeology in Gurgaon, Haryana, India. Set up at the University in 1979, this archive is a national facility, open to all who are interested in the study of Indian art. This collection is a unique collection outside India, the only other such collection being the one in Gurgaon. The holdings of the South Asia Art Archive currently consist of around 115,000 black-and-white photographs (classified by period and region), site and museum indexes, and ca 4,000 color slides. (In addition, the University has a teaching collection of more than 15,000 South Asia slides, most of which are online at the Fine Arts Image Collection.) By agreement with the AIIS and the Smithsonian Foreign Currencies Program, which funds the Gurgaon Center, photographs added to the Gurgaon archive are added also the archive in Philadelphia, keeping it a current tool for research. A portion of the AIIS Image Collection can be found online. The South Asia Art Archive also has documentation in the areas of Baroque architecture in India and the architecture and sculpture from other parts of South Asia.
Some other important collections in the Archive have also been partially digitized, including the Mary Binney Wheeler Collection.
Location
The archive can be accessed from the South Asia Seminar Room on the fifth floor of the University's Van Pelt Library, 34th and Walnut Streets, Philadelphia, PA 19104. The archive is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Visitors are advised to contact Pushkar Sohoni, South Asia Studies Librarian, for access (215-898-7460).

Reproduction of photographs
The archive facility at the University of Pennsylvania is not able to supply photographic prints. Prints from the AIIS negatives, however can be requested directly from the AIIS Center for Art and Archeology, Post Bag No. 67, Plot No. 22, Sector-32, Institutional Area, Gurgaon-122 001 Haryana, Telephone: 91-124-2381424 or 91-124-2381536, Fax: 91-124-2380843, Email: aiisgurgaon@aiis.org.in
Guide to the AIIS South Asia Photo Archive cabinet drawers

The material is organized first by chronological periods, then by state, and finally by site name. However, small thumbnail images are also supplied which are filed by site name which is how Art Historians often know the site rather than by either date or location. The thumbnail images are located in the file cabinets located on the western wall.

One of the very impressive byproducts of this effort is the multivolume summary work the Encyclopaedia of Indian temple architecture edited by Michael W. Meister (Philadelphia : American Institute of Indian Studies and the University of Pennsylvania Press, 1983-) : Location: South Asia Reference NA6001 .E52 1983.

The following is a list of the site photographs in the AIIS South Asia Photo Archive located in the South Asia Reading Room, Van Pelt Library, 5th floor, West End, 3420 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104-6206. The numbers refer to the file cabinet itself, and the letters to the cabinet drawer. The basic classification is: State:Location:Site. The first nine cabinets are for painting, terracotas and sculpture. Then begins the photographs of sites. If you have any questions regarding the collection, please contact the South Asia Librarian, Pushkar Sohoni.
