Daily
Life:
Mary
B. Wheeler truly had a talent for making the most mundane images of daily
life visually striking. Filtered through her camera's lens, even the simplest
daily activities, such as cleaning house, gathering water, and washing
laundry in the river, achieve a poetic beauty. These pages present images
from the collection that bring together various aspects of the lives of
the people that Mary B. Wheeler associated with and encountered during
her travels in South Asia. From people engaged in leisurely picnics in
the park to artisans at work, and from laborers working the lumber trade
with elephants in the jungle to salesmen on the river, these images uniquely
detail the many ways that people engage with their environment.
