Dance and musical performance play an important role in religious practice and temple ritual in South Asia. Aside from functioning as a ritual activity, dance and music are celebrated art forms. Competitions are held on local and national levels, and training is rigorous and exacting. During her travels, Mary B. Wheeler was able to capture a wide variety of performances with her camera. Her lens brings to life the animation and excitement of the moment, giving the viewer the impression of witnessing these performances in person.
