Ritual is the animating force that enlivens the space around temples and pilgrimage centers. Among Mary B. Wheeler's images are many which document specialized ritual which occurs within Hindu and Buddhist temples. From individual puja, or devotion to the deity, to large scale festivals, ritual is a force that makes the intangible presence of the divine accessible to the worshipper. Festivals also play an important role in religious life in South Asia by bringing the temple into contact with the larger urban area. From the Perahera procession of the Sacred Tooth relic in Kandy, to the celebration of the Hindu New Year, festivals animate the streets and reinforce the structure of the communities that participate in them.
