As Buddhism flourished in Sri Lanka, the landscape became filled with dagobas, or monumental shrines encasing relics of the Buddha, and pilgrimage sites. Bodhi trees, enshrined and worshipped, served as reminders of the Bodhi tree under which Buddha achieved enlightenment.
