The
capital of Sri Lanka was eventually moved south to Polonnaruwa. In the
middle of the twelfth century, the king, Parakrama Bahu I, also known
as "Parakrama Bahu the Great", sponsored restorations and additions
to the city's fabric. These improvements included the fortification of
the city through three concentric walls, the excavation of great artificial
lakes, and the construction of many buildings, including a palace and
a number of temples and monasteries.
