Mary B. Wheeler relates the story of King Walagam-Bahu, who took refuge in mountains caves for fifteen years when the royal city of Anuradhapura was conquered by invaders from South India. Upon his triumphal return to Anuradhapura, the king had the Dambulla caves transformed into glorious rock-cut temples, resplendent with sculptures and paintings of Buddhist deities.
