South Asia in Special Collections
Many rare titles on South Asia are held in the Rare Book & Manuscript Library in Van Pelt Library. A particular strength is the collection on the early travel literature on South Asia. Titles from the 18th and 19th centuries are well represented in a wide variety of subjects such as history, regligion, politics, conditions of the time, early historical writings on Indian civilization. Texts that discuss South Asia from the 16th and 17th centuries are also well represented in the collection in Latin, Portuguese and English. Many unusual and rare materials such as the works of Bathazar E. Solvyns, the Dutch artist, are represented in the collection. Among authors, the collection holds an impressive number of first editions of Rudyard Kipling.
A large number of unique ephemeral items such as posters and postcards are also in the collections.
