Courseware & Library Services

The Penn Libraries are committed to helping learners and teachers achieve their goals. Courseware gives us new ways to provide service, whether through addition of content or creation of communication paths with librarians. The Library oversees a vast set of resources, in texts and expertise, which have been extended through courseware. Following are a few ways in which the Library can assist you.

  • Scanning and uploading of required readings (Electronic Reserves): The Library will scan reserve materials and upload them into your Blackboard course site. (Faculty also may continue to use the Library's traditional reserve services for printed books, personal copies, photocopies.) Because Blackboard provides secure access to your site's content areas, only those students who are registered for the course will be able to view electronic reserve materials.
  • Linking to licensed Data and Information Bases, E-journals, E-books and specific articles: Many of the Library's online resources are restricted to Penn users and require authentication in order to use them. Linking to an article in JSTOR, for example, is not as simple as copying the address from your browser's window and pasting it into your course site. But the Library can help you integrate links to subscription resources into your website so that your students can more easily access them.
  • Linking to Library Image Collections: As with other resources restricted to the Penn community, Library image collections often require extra steps to ensure that any links you make to them will work as expected. We can work with you to pull image resources into your course sites.
  • Linking to research guides for specific course-related topics: The Library's subject specialists have created research guides for a wide range of academic disciplines and particular courses, and they can assist you in gathering not only books and journals, but also e-journals, databases and worthwhile websites.

If you would like to take advantage of any of these services, or find out more about them, contact your school or departmental Library Subject Specialist, or, if you use the Blackboard Course Request Form, select "yes" for the option of having your Library Subject Specialist contact you. Feel free to submit suggestions for courseware-related Library services to bb-suggestions (at) pobox.upenn.edu.

The table below represents the University of Pennsylvania's "courseweb" - websites providing course-related information ranging from syllabi and course readings to discussion boards. Many sites require PennKey authentication for access to their materials and tools. Blackboard, currently in use by 10 of Penn's 12 schools, represents the most pervasive platform for course sites, and it accounted for approximately 2020 courses in the Spring 2007 term. Blackboard provides secure and easy to use tools for publishing course content to the Web and for facilitating communication among course participants.
