About NOOK Study

NOOK Study is a free download for annotating PDFs, e-books, and other electronic documents. It integrates with Blackboard via an instructor-enabled tool.

Installing NOOK Study

NOOK Study is available as a free download here.

Instructors and students will need to download this program before attempting to use the NOOK Study tool in Blackboard.

After clicking on the Download NOW button, you will follow a series of steps to complete the installation process. Please note that you will be asked to set up a Barnes & Noble account if you do not already have one.

Setting Up Your "My Barnes & Noble eBooks" Folder

Upon installation, NOOK Study automatically creates a folder in your computer's "My Documents" folder called "My Barnes & Noble eBooks." Any files that you upload to NOOK Study, either through purchasing a textbook or manually importing a file, will appear in this folder.

The "My Barnes & Noble eBooks" folder contains the original copies of files that have been uploaded to NOOK Study. Any modifications that you make to a text within the NOOK Study reader--mark-ups, annotations, or stickies--will not appear in the "My Barnes & Noble eBooks" version.

Purchasing a Textbook through NOOK Study

  1. On the ""Textbooks for this course"" page, click on Buy Print or Buy Digital. There might not be an option, depending on the textbook. The link will take you to the University of Pennsylvania's Official Campus Bookstore website.

  2. Follow the directions on the Official Campus Bookstore's website to purchase the textbook.

Uploading a Document to NOOK Study

  1. Click Add Item on the "My Library" menu. The "Add Item" prompt will appear.

  2. Click Import File next to "Choose a file to import and add to your library."

  3. Click the X in the upper right-hand corner of the "Add Item" prompt.
  4. Important: NOOK Study does not give a notification that the document has been imported. The first page of the document will appear on the greyed-out portion of the screen, but the image can be difficult to view. Closing the "Add Item" prompt is the best way to ensure that the document has been imported.
