UNIX Systems Administrator
Under the direction of the Assistant Director for Information Technologies, the UNIX Systems Administrator is responsible for all aspects of UNIX Systems management, operation & security. Oversee operations on UNIX systems including maintenance and upgrades of software & hardware, backups & continuity, security & access management, and troubleshooting. Must understand java framework installation & management. Research & design solutions for application deployment, management, security and maintenance. Support application development, implementation, and operation in a web-based, database-driven environment - applications may be developed in-house or 3rd party. Provide direct technical support for Voyager, Blackboard, Apache, Lucene, Java/Tomcat Proxy Service, and Oracle & other data stores. Design system configurations to support a wide variety of Library applications including courseware, databases, search engines, and XML-based data delivery systems. Install and manage Apache/Tomcat web server environment, an XML Lucene-based data store, and all necessary supporting technologies including ssl, PERL, DBI, XML & XSLT, and other required software. Recommend and implement systems architecture for servers, core software, network equipment, security of electronic assets.Position requires on-call availability.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
- BA/BS in Computer Science or related field and a minimum of 2 years relevant system administration experience or equivalency of education and experience.
- Hands-on experience in managing UNIX servers in a production environment.
- Experience with Sun Solaris or Linux in production environment.
- Proficiency in two of the following scripting languages: sh, Perl, php, wsh, vbs, ColdFusion, XSLT.
- Experience managing database systems such as Oracle and with managing server-based data stores.
- Experience with managing web-based application environments.
- Knowledge of ethernet-based tcp/ip and related protocols; hands-on knowledge of software and hardware firewalls and other security layers.
- Experience with installation experience or management of a java framework such as JBoss, Spring, or Cocoon.
- Experience in an XML data environment.
- Experience supporting enterprise-level systems in a web-based and database-driven application environment.
- Experience supporting an application development team and working in an academic IT operation or in a Library.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate and understand technical requirements, and to be responsive to specification documents.
- Familiar with project design and management concepts.
- Good interpersonal skills, reliability, and flexibility, demonstrated communication skills, both oral and written, and sense of humor.
