Wharton Esherick and the Birth of the American Modern. Wharton Esherick and his milieu during the 1920s and 1930s will be the subject of a major exhibition opening on September 7, 2010. This exhibition at the University of Pennsylvania will examine the relationships Esherick had with various writers and artists, and how they interacted with and influenced each other during this period of social and cultural upheaval in America. It will also consider Esherick's contributions to a number of genres, from drawings, prints, posters, and book illustrations to sculpture and furniture, and place them in the context of the period.
