Marian Anderson came to know H. T. Burleigh in her teenage years, and the two maintained a friendship that lasted until the elder musician's death. In the following letter, dated 25 July 1933, Burleigh discusses his association with Alfredo Salwaggi, then director of the Chicago Opera Company. He suggests to Ms. Anderson that an audition for Maestro Salwaggi might benefit her career, given that Salwaggi had "displayed such unusual and encouraging broadmindedness in hearing and employing our singers."
