Nathaniel Dett (1882-1943) was on the faculty of the Hampton Institute in Virginia from 1913 to 1931, becoming director of music in 1926. During his tenure he developed the Hampton Institute Choir, which gained international recognition under his guidance. Marian Anderson appeared with the Choir on several occasions and came to know the composer-conductor quite well. Dett's arrangement of the spiritual "Poor Me," published in 1923, was dedicated to Ms. Anderson. The copy below also includes Dett's penned dedication, dated April 21st of that year, which reads: "To Miss Marian Anderson, Twice dedicated. What more can I say?"
