Although known primarily for her songs, Florence Price (1888-1953) was the first African American woman to gain widespread recognition as a symphonic composer with the 1933 performance of her Symphony in E minor by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. She is perhaps best known, however, for her arrangement of the spiritual, "My Soul's Been Anchored in De Lord," which became popular through Ms. Anderson's performances and was subsequently published in 1937.
