The composer and choral conductor Hall Johnson (1888- 1970) graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1910. As the founding director of the Hall Johnson Choir, he composed or arranged all of the music the group performed. His spiritual arrangements for solo voice with piano accompaniment were popularized by both Roland Hayes, the dedicatée of "Jesus, Lay Your Head in De Winder" [below] and Marian Anderson, to whom this copy is inscribed.
