| León Pinelo was a judge, jurist, and one of the first bibliographers of the New World. In this treatise, he reviews the history of the granting of encomiendas - the right to extract tribute or labor from specific Indian groups - to Spanish colonists. León Pinelo surveys New Spain, giving information concerning each region's discovery and conquest. This text probably served as a manual for the Council of the Indies in their review of the legitimacy of encomienda grants. | |
