Les voyages du sieur de Champlain Xaintongeois...
Paris: Jean Berjon, 1613.
In the 1613 edition of his Voyages Champlain included three engravings dramatizing encounters between French soldiers, their Algonquin and Montagnais allies, and hostile Iroquois tribes. These were essentially battles over trading rights and access to the St. Lawrence corridor. Although Champlain engineered victory for his Indian allies - and featured his actions in these engravings - the Iroquois allied themselves with the Dutch and disrupted French trade for decades.
