This letter signed by Cortés concerns the investigation by Spanish officials of the vast Mexican colony he himself had conquered only five years previously. When called to a hearing following the mysterious death of an investigative judge sent by Charles V, Cortés declares here that he cannot attend and appoints three deputies to act as his agents.
