René de Laudonnière, L'Histoire notable de la Floride... Paris: Guillaume Auvray, 1586. |
Laudonnière was sent in 1564 by fellow Huguenot Admiral Coligny to help realize the French dream of establishing a presence in the New World which they could use to compete with the Spanish. The attempt was unsuccessful, and the fruitless adventure might well have been forgotten had not Laudonnière brought out this short, dramatic memoir in 1586. | |
