Benzoni, an Italian, traveled to Spanish possessions in the New World in 1541 and published his history of the Spanish colonies in 1565. His text, liberally adapted from other accounts, became notorious for its indictment of the Spanish. It was quickly translated into Latin, French, German, and Dutch.
