Special Collections Digital Content Analyst / Programmer
Opportunity:
In early 2013, the University of Pennsylvania Libraries will launch its new Special Collections Center. Among the units to be inaugurated within the new center is the Schoenberg Institute of Manuscript Studies (SIMS). Building on the work of the Schoenberg Center for Electronic Text and Image, SIMS staff will be dedicated to transforming the creation and use of digital humanities content, based on Penn's extensive range of physical materials and digital content. SIMS is seeking an experienced and creative programmer/analyst who will work with the staff of SIMS and the Rare Book and Manuscript Library curatorial staff in developing new modes of use and access to digitized primary resources for the purpose of study and research. This position will report to the Director of the Special Collections Center.
Duties:
- Serve a strategic role in support of the creation and use of Special Collections digital content
- Develop and implement user programs to enable users to access and use Special Collections born digital data locally and internationally
- Redesign and rebuild the Schoenberg Database of Manuscripts to allow world-wide access and collaboration; plan a migration path for legacy Special Collections digital content into new user environments
- Provide support and maintain Special Collections digital content systems and tools in collaboration with Special Collections Center curatorial staff
- Assist faculty and students in the planning and programming of digital humanities projects; and monitor new technology developments in the creation, use and dissemination of scholarly digital content
- Participate in the planning of grant funded, collaborative projects.
Qualifications:
Preferred:
- Advanced Degree in the humanities and an understanding of humanities research methods
- Experience designing and implementing successful digital humanities projects
- Experience working on large scale collaborative digitization projects
- Demonstration of strong collaborative skills and ability to work in a team environment
- Work and other experience that demonstrate participation and standing in digital cultural heritage fields
- Excellent communication skills
Required:
- Masters Degree plus five to seven years of data management/web programming or related experience
- Web programming experience and knowledge of the following:
- Java web technologies including J2EE, knowledge of Java and Java Servlets, MVC frameworks (Spring or other), servlet containers (Tomcat or other), Java database interface technologies (JDBC, Hibernate)
- Ruby on Rails and Ruby
- Knowledge of application development methodologies, including testing (for example, JUnit, RUnit, Rspec) and version control tools (CVS, Subversion, Mercurial, Git)
- Additional experience with HTML, XML, XSLT, JavaScript, jQuery, SQL (PostgreSQL, Oracle)
- Working knowledge of the following operating systems: Mac OS, Windows, and UNIX systems, such as Linux, BSD, and Solaris
