The Science and Engineering Libraries' proudly present their summer series of workshops, designed to help researchers improve and develop information searching skills using a number of key scitech resources. This summer, we offer five different workshops.
-
SciFinder Basics
July 15, 2003, Tuesday, 3:30-4:30PM, Carolyn Hoff Lynch Seminar Room, Chemistry Building
Teaches attendees basic methods of SciFinder searching, including how to perform structure and reaction searches, tricks for effective text searching, what a substructure search is and how to perform a simple one, what a substructure search is and how to refine a text, substance, or reactions search. -
INSPEC
July 21, 2003, Monday, 4-5:30PM, Goldstein Electronic Classroom
This workshop is designed to teach effective searching of the INSPEC database to locate journal articles, conference papers and report literature. INSPEC includes information in physics, physical chemistry, spectroscopy, computer science, and information science, often including articles and topics excluded by SciFinder. -
INSPEC/Compendex
July 30, 2003, Wednesday, 12-1PM, 337 Towne Building
August 7, 2003, Thursday, 12-1PM, 337 Towne Building
Two of the most powerful engineering databases, COMPENDEX & INSPEC, are now searchable simultaneously on the same platform! INSPEC includes information in physics, physical chemistry, spectroscopy, computer science, and information science; COMPENDEX covers engineering information, including chemical engineering. This workshop is designed to teach effective searching of these databases. (Note: if you plan to attend this workshop, you need not attend the INSPEC workshop; similar techniques and topics will be covered.) -
Penn's Online Library: Franklin, Electronic Resources, and Navigating the Web Site
August 5, 2003, Tuesday, 3 - 4 PM, 337 Towne Building
Topics include navigating the Library Web page, including techniques of searching Franklin, requesting items that you need, finding e-journals and databases, online renewals. An excellent orientation to anyone new to the University of Pennsylvania, and a good brush-up for people who have been here for a while! -
Gmelin
August 14, 2003, Thursday, 3-5PM, Goldstein Electronic Classroom
Teaches attendees basic structure searching in Gmelin CrossFire. Gmelin is an electronic handbook of inorganic compounds, including more than 5 million substances, reactions, and properties, whose references date back to 1690. The workshop will also cover techniques of locating properties information by performing simple text searches and combination text-substance queries.
