Beyond Google: Finding Quality Information
(27-AUG-03)

The Science & Engineering Libraries proudly present their fall series of workshops, designed to help researchers improve and develop information searching skills using a number of key scitech resources. This fall we offer six different workshops.

  • The Nuts and Bolts of Finding Information at Penn: What Every Scientist and Engineer Should Know
    September 16, 2003, Tuesday, 3 - 4 PM, 337 Towne Building

    October 1, 2003, Wednesday, 2 - 3 PM, 337 Towne Building

    October 20, 2003, Monday, 10 - 11 AM, Room 3C2 DRL

Description of information services available at the University of Pennsylvania and how to locate them on the Science and Engineering Libraries Web site. An excellent orientation to anyone new to the University of Pennsylvania, and a good brush-up for people who have been here for a while!

  • MathSciNet
November 11, 2003, Tuesday, 2 - 3:30 PM, Goldstein Electronic Classroom, Van Pelt Library

MathSciNet is a comprehensive database covering the world's mathematical literature since 1940. It also covers mathematical applications in other disciplines such as chemistry, economics, and computer science. This workshop will summarize the key features of the database, enabling participants to search using keywords, mathematics subject classification or author index. It will also demonstrate how to combine search terms using boolean operators and how to save and download your search results.

  • SciFinder Updates
    September 25, 2003, Thursday, 3-4 PM, 2000 Vagelos Labs

Introduces the new features and functionality in the SciFinder Scholar 2004 client. If desired, workshop will include a discussion of the client software needed to run the database, how to download and install it, and how to use SciFinder off campus.

  • INSPEC/Compendex
    October 28, 2003, Tuesday, 3 - 4 PM, 337 Towne Building

Two of the most powerful engineering databases, COMPENDEX & INSPEC, are now searchable simultaneously on the same platform! This workshop is designed to teach effective searching of these databases to locate journal articles, conference papers, and technical reports. Topics covered will include keyword, author, and journal title searching; combining and limiting searches; de-duplicating and downloading results.

  • Beilstein for Beginners
November 13, 2003, Thursday, 3 - 5 PM, Goldstein Electronic Classroom, Van Pelt Library

Teaches attendees basic CrossFire search techniques. Section on structure searching includes how to draw a structure in the CrossFire structure editor and how to perform a search for either an exact structure, a simple substructure, or a partial or complete reaction. Also describes how to use a combined structure-text search to find property information on compounds. Includes a discussion of the client needed to run the database, how download and install it, and how to use the CrossFire client off campus.

  • ISI Science Citation Index SPACE STILL AVAILABLE!
November 26, 2003, Wednesday, 3 - 4:30 PM, Goldstein Electronic Classroom, Van Pelt Library

December 4, 2003, Thursday, 2 - 3:30 PM, Goldstein Electronic Classroom, Van Pelt Library

This workshop is designed to teach you how to use the Science Citation Index effectively. You will learn how to search for journal articles by topic and author; how to use the citation index to find journal articles that cite a particular author or paper and how to combine, limit, save and download your searches and results.
