The Encyclopedia of Language & Linguistics, 2nd edition, originally published by Elsevier in 2006 as a 14-volume set, is now available online to Penn readers through ScienceDirect.
ELL2 is a mammoth survey of languages, linguistic science, and every conceivable ancillary field from animal communication through medicine and language to writing systems. "The reference tool par excellence for a very long time", according to one reviewer, ELL2 in print offers 11,000 pages with more than 3,000 articles, each with cross-references and extensive bibliographic annotations. Penn's prominence in linguistic science is well-represented in ELL2 with at least 67 articles by Penn faculty, former faculty, and alumni.
The online version of ELL2 provides the same content as the print version. It adds continuing updates and additions, and includes supplemental illustrative material including videos. ScienceDirect has provided each ELL2 article with a persistent URL and DOI so that individual articles and article lists may be linked easily from Blackboard.
