Launch of new DLA site for Medieval & Renaissance Manuscripts
(29-JUL-09)
The latest DLA site to go live is: Medieval & Renaissance Manuscripts (http://dla.library.upenn.edu/dla/medren). A product of the page-turning group, headed by Dennis Mullen, the site provides faceted searching for approximately 800 discrete manuscript items held by the Rare Book & Manuscript Library. Much of the original work on the facets was accomplished by Amey Hutchins and Katherine Schultz. Contributing to the final version were Peter Cline, Marissa Hendricks, Delphine Khanna, Regan Kladstrup, and Leslie Vallhonrat.
The Penn Libraries received a two-year grant from the NEH to create digital facsimiles of all pre-1601, European manuscripts held by the Rare Book & Manuscript Library. Essential to the success of the project was the implementation of a delivery system for these facsimiles. While the current site contains but a handful of facsimiles, it does serve as a sophisticated discovery tool for all of Penn's medieval and Renaissance manuscripts. Over the course of the next two years, the number of facsimiles available will steadily grow. At the conclusion of the grant, every entry will have an accompanying facsimile. So please stay tuned.
