Infrequently Used Titles Are Moving from Van Pelt-Dietrich's 3rd Floor
(06-NOV-09)

After review by subject librarians that began last spring and was completed over the summer and vetted by faculty, more than half of the materials on the 3rd floor of Van Pelt-Dietrich Library Center in the Library of Congress Class A (mainly reference works and general periodicals) are being moved to the High Density Storage facility.
The focus for transfer was on:
  • Infrequently used books.
  • Print serials with stable online full-text versions.
  • Ceased, canceled and older print serials that bibliographers have identified as low use.
  • Superseded reference materials that are no longer consulted on site.
  • Rare materials requiring increased security.
Materials that will remain in Van Pelt are mostly current periodicals or titles that were determined to be heavily used, due either to their historical importance, or to the absence of suitable online versions.
The move is underway and will continue over the next several months until complete. Materials remaining in Van Pelt will stay in their current location pending a general reorganization of the 3rd floor. This move will create needed space for growth of the remaining live periodicals and will also allow us to ease crowding in other collections on the floor.
