Rare Inquisition Broadside Acquired
(12-JUL-08)

The Rare Book and Manuscript Library has acquired an important broadside printed by the Mexican Inquisition in 1817.

The broadside is unusually large (33x23 inches) and consists of two printed sheets glued side by side. It lists over fifty books banned by the Mexican Inquisition. Most of the listings include specific reasons for the prohibition, such as heresy, political threats to the state, or immoral content. Printed during the Mexican war for Independence, the document offers insight into challenges to church and state during this period. This broadside was acquired with funds from the Henry Charles Lea and Jeffrey Keil endowments.
