Sibylla Benatova came to the Rare Book and Manuscripts
Department of Penn Libraries in 2000.
Her specialties are Asian papers and their historic production and
use in conservation. Sibylla has traveled across Thailand and Japan
to study the traditional methods of creating mulberry paper. In
addition to her role as a Senior Conservation Technician for Paper
at the Steven Miller Conservation Laboratory, Sibylla established
and manages the A Book a Day Program. This initiative is a
partnership between the Van Pelt Libraries and two public schools
in West Philadelphia. The program started in 2014 and to this day
has donated over 1000 new books to the students and teachers
in our partnering schools. Sibylla’s interests are hand-made
natural-fiber papers, children’s literature, and illustrated text.
