The Libraries are laboratories of learning, continually redefined by the scholars who use them to synthesize and create knowledge. Not surprisingly we hear that the Libraries are far more exciting places than they once were. Crammed with information, recognized for research help and learning support, our Libraries have become "teaching institutions," in the words of Penn professor Andy Lamas. Within the Libraries, the world's best students gather to do work that no mere classroom can support. They encounter history in the actual books that Shakespeare once handled and also learn to use the latest technology. They come and are transformed. Our goal is to further these transformative experiences in the Libraries, particularly for the humanities, the physical sciences, medicine and nursing.
