The Orrery Society

The Orrery Society supports the enhancement and preservation of scholarly collections at the Penn Libraries. Named for the David Rittenhouse Orrery, which maps the movements of the solar system, the Society is dedicated to the memory of Martin Meyerson, former President of Penn, President of the Friends of the Library, and a consummate library supporter.

Membership in the Orrery Society is open to:
  • Individuals or families who donate annually $2,500 or more to the Orrery Fund (an acquisition fund)
  • Individuals or families who create new endowed acquisition funds at the $50,000 level (lifetime membership)
  • Individuals or families who have already established endowed acquisition funds at the Libraries (lifetime membership)
  • Individuals or families who have donated books or other scholarly material, valued at $100,000 or more, to the Libraries will become lifetime members.
  • Designated representatives of corporations, foundations or reunion classes that meet one of the above qualifications.

Society members will be invited to all Library events. They will also be invited to two annual Society-only events that feature Collections or collections themes.

Society members will also be regarded as potential "angels" and alerted to special acquisition opportunities as they present themselves.

Richard S. Johnson W'64, and Deborah Wharton Lippincott C'76, have agreed to serve as Founding Co-Chairs of the Orrery Society. Margy Meyerson has accepted the role of Honorary Chair.
