Van Pelt Library - Rosengarten Reserves
Van Pelt Library - Rosengarten Reserve Room
Reserve materials are books, journal articles, etc. which are required reading for a Penn course. Required readings for social sciences and humanities courses are to be found in the Undergraduate Study Center (Rosengarten Reserve Room) (ground floor east, 215-898-7561). The online catalog, Franklin, shows "ROSENGARTEN RESERVE" as the location when books are in Rosengarten.
Also located in this area is the Adolph G. Rosengarten Jr. Computer Laboratory. This lab is available only to Penn students, faculty, and staff with valid PENNcards.
During the Fall and Spring semesters, the Undergraduate Study Center (including Rosengarten Reserve) is open from 10am Sunday until 12 midnight on Friday, and from 10 am to 2am on Saturday. Hours vary during holidays, intersessions, and summer semesters.
Finding Reserve Materials
Rosengarten Reserve is primarily a self-service, open stack collection, arranged by call numbers. To find call numbers and other information about location, please consult Franklin. You can search for reserve materials by course and by instructor. Most of the books are arranged on open shelves near the Reserve Desk.
Who has privileges in Rosengarten?
All University of Pennsylvania students, faculty, and staff are eligible to use reserve materials and to borrow those items that circulate. Visitors who have a Library Courtesy Card may use reserve materials only in Rosengarten. After midnight or when the rest of Van Pelt is closed, the Undergraduate Study Center is open only to members of the Penn community.
Use within the library
Reserve materials are primarily for use in Rosengarten. However, reserve books, with the exception of personal copies kept at the Desk, may be charged out for 3-hour periods for use in other parts of Van Pelt Library.
Desk Materials, i.e. some books and all pamphlets (photocopies and article reprints), are kept at the Reserve Desk and are limited to 2-hour room use. You may charge out only one Desk item at a time.
With the exception of Desk Materials, reserve books may be checked out for home use overnight after 4 p.m.
To return a Reserve book: Please return Reserve materials to the Rosengarten Desk. If the Undergraduate Study Center is closed, use the book return slot next to the outside entrance. Reserve material should never be returned to the Van Pelt Circulation Desk. Books are due on the next day that the Library is open by 9:15 a.m. Monday to Friday, by 10:30 a.m. Saturday, and by 12:30 p.m. Sunday.
Because Reserve books are in such heavy demand, fines are high. Fines are $1.00 per hour per book. Fines are computed until the time the book reaches Rosengarten. Return Reserve books only to the Rosengarten Reserve Room.
Fines should be paid at the Reserve Desk when the overdue item is returned. All unpaid fines are sent to the bursar's office for deduction from student deposit accounts, and a charge of $10.00 is assessed.
