Declaring Independence at Penn
Keep what belongs to you: a primer on author's rights
What are your Penn colleagues doing?
The pitfalls of traditional scholarly publishing, together with new publishing models offered by the web, have persuaded some Penn faculty to start new journals or join their editorial boards.
Jonathan Baron, Professor of Psychology, is the editor of Judgment and Decision-Making, a new peer reviewed open access journal, published by the Society for Judgment and Decision Making.
Professor Peter Decherney (English and Cinema Studies), Professor Katherine Sender (Annenberg), and Dean Michael Delli Carpini (Annenberg) are petitioning for increased fair use within the Digital Millenium Copyright Act. Specifically, they are seeking two exemptions for circumvention of technological access control measures: the first, for the purpose of creating video clip compilations for educational classroom use, and the second for preserving public access to works in the public domain.
David Brainard, Professor in the Department of Psychology, is on the editorial board of Journal of Vision, a peer-reviewed journal which offers free access to full text of all articles.
Sampath K. Kannan, Professor in Computer and Information Science, is on the editorial board of ACM Transactions on Algorithms. On December 31, 2003, the entire editorial board of the Journal of Algorithms resigned. Their next step was the creation of this resource.
George Mailath, Walter H. Annenberg Professor of the Social Sciences and Professor of Economics, is on the editorial board of Theoretical Economics, an open access journal created by the Society for Economic Theory as an alternative to two high-cost publications. The new, peer-reviewed outlet for high-quality research in economic theory provides an alternative to the Journal of Economic Theory and Games and Economic Behavior.
Fernando Pereira, Professor and Chair of Computer and Information Science, is on the editorial board of Journal of Machine Learning Research.
Amos B. Smith, III, Rhodes-Thompson Professor of Chemistry and Member of the Monell Chemical Senses Center, was chosen as the first Editor-in-Chief of Organic Letters, a new publication of the American Chemical Society established in collaboration with the Association for Research Libraries, through the Scholarly Publishing & Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC). The coalition was instituted to foster development of lower-cost alternatives to high-priced journals.
Herbert Wilf, Thomas A. Scott Professor of Mathematics, is the Honorary Editor of The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, a peer reviewed journal with free access on the web.
Faculty and students are using ScholarlyCommons@Penn to disseminate, publicize, and archive scholarship generated at the University of Pennsylvania.
