Selections from the toolkits of our librarians
Latex is a document preparation system for high-quality typesetting. It is most often used for technical or scientific documents but it can be used for almost any form of publishing. Latex is not a particular editing program but there are programs written specifically to make using Latex easy.
Mendeley assists at every stage of the research process, from gathering research and annotating PDFs to organizing citations and creating bibliographies.
RefWorks is a web-based bibliography and database manager that allows you to create your own personal database by importing references from text files, online databases and other sources. You can use these references in writing papers and automatically format the paper and the bibliography.
Scrivener is a word processing program that allows users to organize drafts and manuscripts into chapters and sections, manage research notes, and import documents such as PDFs and Word documents. It also has a corkboard feature for organizing notes on "index cards" visually, and a full-screen writing mode that blocks out other windows to allow the user to concentrate on writing.
