On exhibit June 18, 2004 - September 9, 2004
Artists’ Books have polymorphic tendencies, which may be inherent to the book format itself. The book can encompass and intertwine many art disciplines. Printmaking, sculpture, drawing, painting, typography, fibers, and metalsmithing all have a place within the bookmaking lexicon. To have a form of expression that does not limit itself is very appealing and liberating to many artists. They explore and expound upon every aspect of the book making process, frequently with a delightful playfulness. The final product may not resemble anything traditionally defined as a book, a subtle variation of form or content, or just a well-crafted volume. This exhibition displays materials from the Annenberg Rare Book and Manuscript Library that fall within the broad category of Artists’ Books.
