Research Spotlight: Venture-Backed Maternal Health Startups and the Maternal Health Crisis
An interdisciplinary team at Penn used tools from Lippincott Library to analyze venture capital investment and maternal health outcomes.
Lippincott’s Research Spotlight returns to highlight a new paper authored by an interdisciplinary team of researchers at Penn: “Venture-Backed Maternal Health Startups and the Maternal Health Crisis.” The research team was led by Madeline Perry of the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics, and it included members of both the Perelman School of Medicine and the Wharton School. Their article, published in JAMA Health Forum, assesses the degree to which venture-backed pregnancy health startups are addressing known problems in maternal health.
In addition to company websites, the researchers used two library tools for their analysis: Crunchbase and PitchBook. In the article’s methods section, the authors explain that these two databases “were selected as the data sources for this study because of their frequent use in medical literature on VC [venture capital].”
Crunchbase offers a range of live data on startups and investors. Eligible Penn affiliates can access it in person by visiting Lippincott’s Yablon Financial Resources Lab (room 244).
In addition to startup and investor data, PitchBook also includes fund coverage, industry reports, and analyst reports. Eligible Penn affiliates can access it remotely through Lippincott Library's subscription.
