Leading up to his appointment as a director, he was head of the Otto E. Albrecht Music Library and the Eugene Ormandy Music and Media Center for eleven years. Dick is trained as a musician and has played the recorder in the Penn Baroque and Recorder Ensemble since 2004. He is coauthor of The Recorder: A Research and Information Guide, which won the Music Library Association's 2014 Duckles Award for the best book-length bibliography or other research tool in music.
During his years at Penn, Dick has led a number of strategic projects for the Penn Libraries. From 2006 until 2008, he was project leader for ScholarlyCommons@Penn—the University of Pennsylvania's institutional repository; he was interim coordinator for humanities collections from 2008 to 2009; and from 2010 until 2014, he was co-team leader of the project that developed the new Franklin catalog. He currently chairs the Libraries' Discovery Team.
