Luis Roman’s Lens: Capturing Penn Rec with Creativity and Precision

The Vitale Digital Media Lab is the only center on campus that provides high-end camera equipment free-of-charge for Penn students, staff, and faculty. This has given us the opportunity to interact with and provide services for a huge variety of different student groups, Penn events, and academic departments on campus. 
 

When Luis Roman, part of the Penn Community since 2019 and currently a staff member and photographer in Penn’s Recreation Department, discovered that there was a place on campus that could help make marketing easier and more exciting, he became a frequent visitor! 
 

“I learned about Vitale Digital Media lab through googling equipment rental services at Penn because my previous institution at Temple University had a way to rent out equipment as well. I wanted to see if Penn had a similar service and the Vitale Digital Media lab came up and I rented out a camera for one of our larger events!”
 

Each Week, Luis comes into the lab to borrow a variety of equipment suited for fast-paced photography and videography. One example is our Insta360 cameras, great for taking high quality VR videos. Luis’s photo of the swimmer (one of my favorite photos to come from his promotional material) was captured on one of our Sony Alpha series cameras and lenses. The photo demonstrates just how much detail these bodies are capable of capturing and what a good job they do at capturing action shots, making them a perfect marketing tool. 
 

“Vitale Digital Media lab has assisted me in creating and continually increasing the quality of content for my department. I always like to borrow equipment I am unfamiliar with whether it's a 360 camera or a cinema camera to try out new creative concepts and also have the ability to capture the best moments from events for participants to see themselves in the social media.”
